Located in Poway, California, (North San Diego County), Toray Membrane USA, Inc. (TMUS) is looking for a full-time PRODUCT ENGINEER to join its team. Reporting to the VP of Technical Operations, this position will provide technical resources and support for the Engineering department which includes but is not limited to areas of product design, production line support, process development and control, quality control, and safety.  Will demonstrate competent engineering principles through a rational process of problem solving, decision making, potential problem analysis and an ability to communicate with peers in a collaborative manner.

The Product Engineer will interface with key internal stakeholders and outside vendors and will perform all work onsite. The work schedule for this position is Monday thru Friday.  This position is a full-time regular exempt role.


Essential Duties include:

  • Design new products, coordinate the introduction of new products into manufacturing, including developing and implementing processes, equipment and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Support Manufacturing by improving existing products or processes. Problem-solve, investigate and observe at point of problem, conduct element tests (performance evaluation, dye test, and autopsy). This is to include, but not limited to process improvements, cost reduction and scrap reduction activities.
  • Interact on a regular basis with Manufacturing and other technical personnel to resolve manufacturing process and equipment issues. This is to include dedication to element performance test equipment (Eval Units), Cell Test, Auto Wind machines, and an accelerated test machine.
  • Be fully knowledgeable with all manufacturing processes. Work as the technical resource or lead problem solving teams and participate on project teams to improve performance of existing processes. Participate in special projects as required.
  • Work closely with Maintenance and Process Engineering personnel performing troubleshooting and improvement tasks.
  • As required, provide support to Technical Support staff to coordinate customer return activities.
  • As required, perform logistical handling of pilot systems to include installation, operation and data collection.
  • Design/draw product components and manufacturing tools and equipment using computer design software (SolidWorks preferred). Coordinate production with vendors.
  • Work with in-house and headquarters staff to help qualify new materials for products, including certification by third-party organizations such as NSF or FDA.
  • All other duties and accountabilities, not listed above, as assigned.

Experience Required

Ideal candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in a manufacturing environment. Water industry experience a plus. Must be highly organized, able to multi-task and prioritize, as well as possess strong verbal and written communications skills. Must be a strong team player and an active contributor in a highly collaborative work environment. Individual must also possess strong analytical troubleshooting and problem resolution skills as well as the ability to control and improve internal processes.

Proficient knowledge of root cause analysis, corrective and preventive action and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel) is required. Proficient use of a computer design software is highly desired (SolidWorks preferred). Six Sigma and/or DMAIC experience a plus.  Must also have the ability to sit and use a keyboard for extended periods of time; walk and stand on a frequent basis; and frequently lift items up to 10 pounds when necessary, as well as occasionally lift between 11-20 pounds when needed.

Education/Certifications.  A Bachelor’s degree in any Engineering discipline is required, however, focus in Mechanical Engineering is desired and preferred.
